Progresssss, its starting to look like a car!

Diff installed... holy crap this is NOT a smart idea to do yourself.... lying on my side, balancing the diff on the jack securing it with my hands, then using my feet to pump the jack... surprisingly only took 5 minutes.......

Exhaust before and rusty ass midpipe (painted the exhaust tip because it was scuffed and had some black plastic melted on it... after sanding it smooth it left scratches so i painted it a low gloss/almost flat black... it was inspired by the apexi noir exhaust.. love the color, not too sure how it will look on the car or if i want to finish painting the muffler aswell (mostlikely wiill))

DO WORK SON.

New toys.. 20 ton press, and 3/4 drive socket set...

Removing and installing bushings... various pics to show how i maneuvered some of the suspension to pop the bushings out

diff bushings...

i sandwhiched the bushing and brace between 2 plates.. went if easy if it tilts one direction apply pressure on the plate with your hand and it will force it in straight..
the lip did not full pop through hense the rounded edge

so i tried rigging something up to pop the lip out...
i got it eventually but ^^^ this method doesn always work.. jsut throwing out some ideas..

been lazy as hell. forgot the dates but this is from my last post up till last sunday....

ABS lines and bracket getting painted

a shot of the engine bay finished with some stuff being put back on...

Now i was debating what color i wanted to paint my suspension/ subframes... it was a debate btw blue and gold...

both looked bad as they were light.. so i tested it out over a black base coat.. much better!

Gas cap neck had some rust....

so i sand blasted the collar.... CLEAN!

Gas tank.. assembling it back together with new hoses/painted parts (por15 )

Painting rear and front subframe. wirebrushed/sand blasted majority of the rust and painted it with por15 to protect from furture rusting... then sprayed gold (technically rustoleum calls it antique brass)

then suspension sprayed with a black base coat.. some parts will remain black, others will be sprayed gold..

Cleanning up the tranny round 1... havent decided what i want to do yet. either paint it gold or white and get friends to graffiti on it...

subframe is installed and bolted in for enough support, toe links? are just hand tightened on... everything will be secured once in place and once i get the impact gun.....

por15 takes some time to dry so never got to do the underside of the front subframe... in the process of por15'ing the other side...

will be sprayed gold and installed back on this weekend!

and lastly cleaning up the diff.. wired brushed loose rust and por15'd.

still need to do a little cleaning and touch up to the diff.

bushing install has been on hold... i got the press but i dont have enough steel plates to angle the suspension parts in the correct direction to pop them out.. will have to find a machine shop that will sell me 1x1x12 square pieces of steel tube...

im getting lazy and loosing motivation with this engine bay... progress is being made but lack of motivation is present...

More failures, hense why i havent updated in a while, got aggravated and lost motivation... this is a accumulation of stuff ive done in the past weeks...

Finished painting the engine bay for the second time! not perfect, but satisfied...

So now on to the top coat!............... wow this came out like shit, so many errors....(this was sprayed)
this is the only spot that came out decent...

Complete waste of a day. back to square 1.

Finished cleaning up the garage, prepped the engine bay, painted, stripped. prepped.
i fail at life.

(i cant tell which is which, all the pics look the same and i cant remember lol)

Then i began to tape off the pass side bin. i decided i am going to cut the bin and reuse my old battery to save money. so this is my pre stage of fg my custom bin batt holder..

Engine bay/fenders painted... por 15- grey (will be painted over with por15 whitecoat)

BUTTTTT it came out like shit. i was dumb enough to do all the prepping with a old sweatshirt as a rag. turns outs all the freaking lint got stuck and the paint looked like SHIT. i let it dry for maybe 30 min came back in the garage and it litterally looked like glossy sandpaper. i was PISSED. i decided to strip it...... hense a pointless day. wast

took about 3 hours to strip (i think, its an estimate, i dont have a clock in the garage, idk thats good or bad.)

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO this is what it looks like now.

awesome, it just has simple green max. tomorrow we'll try it again, por 15 marine clean, metal ready, and por 15-grey.

so i just tidied up, prepped the garage and played with the sandblaster...

Not much progress again.. Some of the homies came over again.. god nothing gets done when the show up.. but the good thing is the air compressor is hooked up!!!

One of the tabs on the AC ducts broke off so im going to resin it back together. it stays in place as is but mind you i want to have one of the cleanest FD's and all the small detail make the difference. again, many things i do will be hidden and never seen, such as the support bar for the dashboard.

Random little misc things done today...

My goal was to start putting the dash and interior back together. but as i was installing various parts i was noticing there were empty connectors.. then remembered the wiring harness was out, and i cant connect it back tilll the engine bay is painted otherwise it would be a pita to paint around it. Day 2 of failure, needed to find busy work..

Im not a fan of rust. I spotted minor surface rust on the support bars for the dashboard. therefore i stripped it out and painted it. used por15.. starting to love this stuff..

Also with the dash apart, i took this time to clean out the AC vents. im sick of the dust blowing in my eyes when i drive, NOT safe.

Also the e-brake stuff finished curing so i got to install the ebrake and cables back into the car.

From the gromet it comes through and i plan on running it along the driver side

then towards the end feed it through the lip? of the rear dr bin, ontop of the trans tunnel then cut a hole in the pass bin and there the wire will end

I decided that stripping the undercarriage down to bare metal to coat with por15 then spray the undercoat would be a pita, take too much time, and waste money. so after having the undercarriage already cleaned, i sprayed duplicolors ruberized undercoat

i hate my life and wish my electrician would come so i can start using the sandblasters and stop with this ghettoness because its such a PITA and a waste of time and its really messy and makes me regret ever starting this project and makes me as mad as this run on sentence is making you mad by reading it. . .

now im relocating my battery, i was going to use the one i have and just relocate it to the bin but realize even tho its a smaller one, it still wont fit... since i had intentions of relocated a battery to the rear bin i was going to custom fab a bracket or some sort... i dont really want to hack up my bins so i will probably switch to the westco miata battery... here are the pics for the base of my battery brace...

first off i covered the part i was going to mold... there are 2 metods of this.
1. cover the area with aluminum foil and tape it on.
2. use strictly tape only.

NOTE: just thought of this half way through this post.. using the aluminum foil method would be ideal for larger flat surfaces, and tape for the corners and edges...

for some odd reason i started out using aluminum foil... ive tried it once and hated it. idk why i bothered trying it again... hense why its half and half...

Next i lubricated it.. you can use petrolium jelly, PAM, or lotion.. i perfer petrolium jelly.. but of those 3 i only had lotion......

Next i applied some resin all over the sections i was going to fg... next i cut pieces of fiberglass mat and cloth. then placed them in the area i was going to mold then dabed resin into it till it was a translucent color..

I applied 2 layers of FG mat/cloth... then left it to harden... will pull it out tomorrow to show the mold itself...

after failing to to more engine bay prep, i needed to do something to feel i was productive. so i tidied up a bit.. damn i need my electrician to hook up my compressor BADLY.

anybody know what this wire wrapped in aluminum foil is? it was hanging inside the back right part of the car.. it was chilling by the antenna module....

Strip, strip, strip.

Went to Whippany today... stopped at the por15 facility and picked up some goodies

basically all the paint and prep stuff i need for the engine bay...

Now to the bloody stripping... as seen in my previous posts i began stripping the paint.. but the por15 im using is a rust preventative. thus, it must be stripped down to bare metal. oh.what.a.bitch.

began using just the wire brush attatchment on a drill

that sucked, so i tried something else. paint stripper WITH a wire brush attatchment for the drill. AWESOME. works alot better and easier. still a bitch tho.

Apply quietcoat in trunk and fix carpet

so the previous owner was stranded in his FD in the boonies... he got hungry.. so he ate a piece of the foam under the carpet...

have no fear, bubbletech is here.
Problem: missing portion of foam
Goal: re-mold foam under carpet for a sturdy base
Solution: bubble tech

Materials needed
Great stuff (foam)

Aluminum foil
Lubrication (petroleum jelly, pam, lotion)
piece of wood
weight

So what i did was i laid out the aluminum foil over the portion where the foam was missing.

Next i lubricated the aluminum foil (i used lotion, its all i had)

Now with the carpet in place, lift it up and spray the Great stuff on the missing area. Great stuff is really sticky so it will stick to the foam and the lubrication on the aluminum foil will prevent it from sticking to the floor.

Last, you want to place it back down.. i used a wood panel i haud and a bucket on top of it to add weight.. When the great stuff cures, it expands and hardens. the weight on top of the carpet is to prevent it from expanding too much..

now when its done curing it pick it up and should look like this...

now peel the aluminum foil and whaaaaaala!

Notice the big circle in the middle? i didnt use enough foam so it was a soft spot and empty, round 2!

Garage is kinda cold and the paint wasnt drying well so i tossed a heater in the car

The main reason i bought sound deadener was in hope to muffle the "clank" noise when slamming the doors. the doors are damn heavy and the hollowness makes them sound cheap and old as hell. i opted for quietcoat vs dynomat because i think its easier to paint inside the door then try laying out dynomat (which is thick and the adheasive is a BITCH if you ever need to take it off) Also after researching on the rx7club, one guy swears by quietcoat... and from what i acheived tonight, the doors sound like theres an improvement. they still sound loud and heavy but when you slam it shut its a solid "glunk" like a heavy door rather then "cheap"

I had intentions of putting the dash back but decided to hold off till the engine bay was painted... thus it would save me the trouble of taping off parts that came through the firewall... in preparation i decided to sort out bolts, nuts, and misc... along with cleaning some parts..

(broke my crapsman socket wrench my friend daves snap on socket wrench...... then abdul to the rescuse! brought an impact gun, but....... we didnt have the right size socket for the gun to ran to the store..... other than that things when smoothly... Ps it was the transmission like cover brace? links the tranny to diff...

Tear down day 2...

first garage mod! florescent lights!

but if you look closely this idiot bought god knows what thinking they were bulbs.................. so now im left with this for now.......

White EXT, originally red, painted white, then painted white again... engine bay is painted with some black rubber texture... as you can see i started experimenting with paint remover... looks like it will come off fairly easy....

My build documentation...

a little history...
First i wanted an rx7, but thought it was impractical because it was a two seat... saw and fell in love with the rx8. had quiet a history. i bought the 8 and 2 years later decided to throw a greddy turbo on it.. 6 months later my E-shaft blew. so then came the first rebuild. got the car back drove around for 2 weeks after 2 gallons of antifreeze, figured it was time to go back to the shop. engine ended up being cracked. rebuild #2, engine #3.... was installed fired up, and sounded wrong... compression showed i believe 120psi and 70psi. shitty motor... onto rebuild #3, engine #4. finally got the car back this is after 6 months of the car sitting in the shop and though to myself fck rotaries. i started looking at boosting an is300 then ended up here. i sold the 8 and was on the hunt for a 7. i bought my first FD from FL and shipped it over intending to use it as a roller and building it up. terrible idea, i knew of a bad interior but the car was much more then i could handle. sold it off and went hunting for a new one. ending up flying to illinois at 6am and driving it back 861 miles, returning to NJ at 230am... long journey but well worth it!

i dont have much mechanical know how but ive always loved building things and putting things together. ive done headers to exhausts, intakes, pulleys, spark plugs, springs, oil changes but not much more than that. with that in mind this should be a fun build!
